Classic Hollywood Films for Halloween

Classic Hollywood Films for Halloween, Frankenstein, dracula, cary grant

Halloween is almost upon us. If you live on a street like mine where no trick-or-treater is going to climb a steep hill just for a mini-Snickers, then it’s a great night to watch a Halloween film. Scary movies like Halloween or A Nightmare on Elm Street are great, but I also love classic ghost stories, and by classic, I mean films from the golden age of Hollywood.

There isn’t a splash of red anywhere in these great old pictures, but they’ll make you laugh or send chills up your spine as fast as any modern movie. So, if you’re looking for a new film to round out your Halloween night, check out my list below, and don’t be afraid, there isn’t a Dracula or Abbot and CostelloMeet the Mummy to be found.

I Married a Witch, Frederic March, Veronica LakeArsenic and Old Lace, Cary Grant, Fank CapraArsenicand Old Lace – It isn’t a ghost story but it does take place on Halloween. It’s a fun, zany romp with the creepiness of a serial killer mixed with the dashing humor of Cary Grant.

IMarried A Witch – Veronica Lake is the original sultry witch with the peek-a-book hairstyle in this paranormal romance. She comes back from the 17th century to get revenge on the man whose ancestors burned her at the stake, and inadvertently falls in love with him.

The Ghost and Mrs. MuirTopper – Another Cary Grant classic. He and Constance Bennett play a husband and wife who die then return as ghosts to spend some of their afterlife teasing their old banker friend. Not a scary film but a ghost of a great time.

Topper, Cary Grant, Constance BennettThe Uninvited РFor a creepier ghost story, check out this Ray Milland classic. It has all the elements of a classic scary movie including a haunted mansion, a s̩ance and a ghostly possession.

The Ghost and Mrs. Muir – A romantic love story between a widow and the ghost who haunts her idyllic seaside home, starring Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney.

When you're done with these scary tales check out my books because you enjoy romance too. www.Georgie-Lee.com

Oh, that's what I like...scary movies with no "splashes of red." Thanks for the suggestions!

The Ghost and Mrs Muir is a favorite and it was later made into a TV show. Though not a ghost story, The Birds is a classic scary movie.

I love these old films if not for their actual content but for the vintage promo posters! Visiting from 'mommymondayblog' link up from over at www.ritewhileucan.com where not much scary or horrific is happening at the moment...

Well I never knew this genre even existed - shame on me! And I am partial to a bit of Cary Grant - I bet they are just awesome classics to watch! I'm afraid I'll be too busy feeding out candy to some 30 trick or treaters we get on Halloween night!

I've seen Arsenic and Old Lace a few times years and years ago and loved it, but I haven't actually ever heard of any of the others. I think I might have to buy "I married a witch" for my Other Half on our anniversary. Lol. I love old films :)

I'm glad you are recommending old movies as I think horror is too awful. I can't say I've seen these ones, though. No trick or treating happening here (small town South Africa) either. Enjoy the rest of October!

Thanks so much for recommending these movies! I love classics and I love thrillers...I never considered combining the two! I'll definitely be searching for and watching these movies on Halloween night.

Ghost stories sound good, I like to read about the paranormal world of Vampires, with Nora Roberts. There intriguing, romantic and keep your attention.
