Musing Mondays

I'm participating in Should Be Reading's Musing Monday. To participate, click here.

Right now, I'm reading two different books about two women who married into ruling families, only to lose their husbands and their thrones.

- The first book is Twilight Over Burma: My Life as a Shan Princess by Inge Sargent

Inge Sargent was an Austrian exchange student at the Colorado School of Mines in the 1950s. She met and fell in love with another student, Sao Kya Seng. They married and traveled to his home country in Burma. Upon arrival, he announced that he was the ruling prince of Hspisaw. Together, they worked to improve the country until the Burmese army seized power and killed Sao.

The book isn't as engaging or as well-written as I'd like, which is making it hard for me to keep reading. However, it is a short book and I'm curious enough about her life to keep reading. For the moment.

The second book is Alexandra: The Last Tsarina by Carolly Erickson.

A much better written and engaging book, it follows Alexandra's life from the death of her mother when she was four, to her own death in 1917 during the Russian Revolution. I've read other books about Nicholas and Alexandra, but they covered the Tsar and Tsarina's time in Russia. This is the first I've read which covers Alexandra's childhood and the influences which shaped her. I'm looking forward to finishing the book and learning more about this tragic woman.
