I recently finished Martha Washington: An American Life by Patricia Brady. It was an excellent biography of America's first First Lady, bringing Martha and her times and experiences to life without being overly academic. Also, at 236 pages, it is a quick read for anyone looking to learn more about American history but who doesn't have a lot of time to read.
Before I read the book, I didn't know much about Martha Washington. She was a resilient woman who supported her husband and whose matronly image hid a will of steel. Living in a world where loved-ones were always at risk from accidents and disease, Martha suffered a series of heartbreaking losses yet it didn't destroy her. Instead, she remained ever strong, standing by her husband, country and family until the end. There is a lot we can learn about strength, courage and the importance of family from a great woman like Martha Washington.
