The Ruins of Chocchoben

Maya, a level above the sea,
we fall from the ship through your thick air,
winding our way over stones and bones
that won't stand for anything
except bats hiding in creeping trees,
waiting for night.

The sun crosses silently over your zenith,
stealing
day
after
day
from your pyramids,
fading the bright pigments of your myths,
its blazing eye seeing you more clearly
than the trowels and brushes
prying under the skin
of your former glory.
